How did a night such as this start do you wonder? Auckland is a city of multiculturalism and party animals. Surely there would be a place where a hip, cool, queer woman could go on a weekend and like the people AND the music?
Sadly there was not.
Proud Mary was dying to go out to a queer friendly environment in Auckland that Provided alternative, cutting edge performers and DJs. She wanted to go out and be herself and dance and listen to music as daring as her.
She searched high and low. Delving into every little bar she could find yet to her disappointment her search was fruitless.
She was lucky enough to meet on her search a like-minded spirit - MIKA. He was in the throws of creating the Takatāpui, Multicultural extravaganza that was AROHA Festival 2010. Proud Mary spoke to him of the troubles of the queer, alternative soul wanting a night for people like her. MIKA wisely said to stop waiting for it to happen and do it yourself. So Proud Mary did just that.
18 months later the night keeps growing. Queers, grrrls, bois, trans, bis, straights ……. everyone’s welcome. Proud Mary’s nights are for those who are ahead of the game in Music, Lifestyle, Politics and Fashion.
